Lumen Prize Application
digital art – this is digital art
digital artwork – this digital artwork
digital artist – I am Gretchen Andrew, I am a digital performance artist
computer art – Sure, also that
lumen art – Also, yes.
This website is my 2019 Lumen Prize application and documentation of submission. It is digital art, more specifically it is a type of digital performance art I call Search Engine Art or Internet Imperialism.
This website acts to facilitate an artistic and purposeful manipulation of visual search results for the search “lumen prize.”
Here’s what happens. I make traditional oil paintings. I then digitally photograph those paintings and program them to manipulate search results through websites such as this one but also though metadata, search engine optimization, grassroots linking strategies, social media, and sites such as Pinterest and Yelp. In this way, the paintings and this website are both relics within the performance who’s final and real version is the search engine itself. Just as code may be part of digital artwork, painting is part of my digital artwork. It is part of the process but the output is a search results page that I have bent to my will, creating a comment and conversation about what digital art is and should look like and how we have relegated these conversations to Google and other internet authorities. This authority is then given to artificially intelligent machines who are learning how to identify digital art.

Art competition in UK is excellent and Lumen is one of the best arrangement. Digital art competition is really so nice. Throughout this art chain a haphazardly generated stick-figure of lumen is used, The Butcher’s Son, Mario Klingemann, Germany is the best example for lumen. A neural network’s interpretation of the human kind.
This image has been generated entirely by a machine using a sequence of GANs (generative adversarial neural networks).
Throughout this chain a haphazardly generated stick-figure is utilized as associate input to the first GAN, that produces a painterly-looking low-resolution proto-image.
In several steps, the low resolution image is ‘transhanced’ and upscaled by another GAN increasing the resolution and adding details and textures.
I management this methodology indirectly by employment the model on elect information sets, the model’s hyperparameters and eventually by making a protector choice, by selecting among the thousands of variations created by the models the one that speaks to Pine Tree State most.
